PASSAGE OF TIME (PASSAGE DU TEMPS) (2007)
COLLECTION FRANÇOIS PINAULT FONDATION
39 international artists
100 photo / video / light works
From the Seventies to the present day!
From 16 October 2007 to 1 January 2008 at the Tri Postal in Lille, lille3000 presented an exhibition called “Passage du Temps” (Passage of Time) thanks to works from the François Pinault Foundation Collection for the first time in France.
The challenge of the “Passage du Temps” exhibition was to attempt to “make an exposition”, i.e and therefore sense and history based on a collection . In this venue, with an industrial architecture that allows works of exceptional dimensions to be shown, curator Caroline Bourgeois has tried to make use of different themes to construct a story of several parts, where each visitor can reinvent or re-appropriate the works on display according to the sensations, questions, pleasures and moments they inspire.
Spread over 6000m2, this exhibition showcased artistic techniques using photography, video, and light. It focuses on the contemporary history of these techniques with six themes being featured: Bedazzle, The Seventies, Shall we play?, Cinema Stories, Living And Surviving, Passage of Time. The themes chosen were a way of looking at the production of artists who have worked within this medium over the past forty years, whilst in no way wishing to be exhaustive.
The exhibition focused on contemporary history, with a period which has called into question the very notion of the work of art and even of the identity of the artist. Moving from the minimalist and conceptual period, the notion of the object and the materials used by artists have been re-invented. Thoughts have become objects of art, whether these be the thoughts of the artist or those of the visitor experiencing the work. The visitor is no longer just a spectator, but rather the actor of the work.
